like criticizing, character sketches and taking notes from excerpts
for many years, all I do is write basic bitch summaries of chapters and shitty annotations here and there but now I want to actually study the books I read
>gtfo retard
I know I may sound like a retard but all I am asking for is a way or any book that teaches you how to read, understand and annotate books of different categories properly and in such a way that they don't look like schizoposts in the future

some anons suggest this book but some absolutely despise it
should I invest my time into reading it ?
will it satisfy my needs ?

No, it is pretty outdated. A lot of changes were made to the school system when it was published in the 1930's, so the criticisms don't hold up nowadays.

Persinally, I think that the best way to study a book is to discuss it with other people. If you can form a book study group, you'll improve both your reading ability and mental health. Good luck Anon!

I don't think it would be any different from talking to people on /lit/ but the idea of conversations proceeding into unraveling of a book does sound interesting
but again, there are several problems here
>I have no friends
>I want to create paperback notes which I could refer to in future while rereading books

Sounds like you just need to start thinking of the bigger picture.

In what way is it outdated? I havent read, but going by similar cases like "How to write and speak correctly" (published around t1900), in a sense its outdated by its particulars and contextualities, but its larger points and messages are very much not, and THAT was what was important and useful about it. How it expressed more wide ranging trends and aspects through those particulars that might be contextually outdated, but between them all you gain a much fuller, wholisitic, and widely applicable appreciation of writing and speaking, weather it be in 1900, 2010, or 1710.

is their an objectively true bigger picture ? is my bigger picture different than other people's ? what do you mean by a bigger picture from YOUr perspective ?

I simply mean that there's only so much you can get out of chapter-by-chapter analysis without having finished the book first. A book is a whole, and its ultimate value is as a singular, complete entity.

The idea of taking notes has always seemed to me lame and awkward. It I ever take "notes" it's either in the form of a table or a graph, or just writing down stuff I want to look up later.
