99% of posters here, including myself, havent read dante in italian, only translations, which makes the comparison entirely moot
also, much of dante's status came from his constant references to the celebrities of his day. its the modern equivalent to a celebrity walking into a sitcom set and the audience goes crazy. "hurr hurr pope I didn't like is in hell, but nonchristian philosophers and poets that fucked kids are in purgatory cuz I like them". Dante is terribly overrated, and I don't see reading the italian making him any better for me
as for milton, he had shitty theology but at least paradise lost has a lot more going on than divine comedy
