You can never have true universality, where you casually drop into a 3 hour impromptu lecture on the Madagascar novel, but if you know what you like it's not such a hassle specialize.

Also there is a world of difference between academic and 'learned' conversation. Being able to be amusing and intelligent about literature is not that hard.

It's very easy to read the core stuff you *should* read. If you have a job you can do it in a couple of years. If you don't, you can do it in six months.
