>Doesn’t /d/ have some smut general they [progression fantasy readers and other degenerates] can fuck off to?
They could, if they wanted to. But like the trannies in reddit and discord, it is not enough that they enjoy their medium in the privacy of their life; not enough that people merely tolerate their existence; not enough that what they deem it acceptable — others must relish in it, praise it, and worst of all, join it. Like pigs who revel in shit, others must join the party. Shitty-dipping, by their definition, is for everyone. They, and only they, have found the meaning of life, it being the never ending consumption of sub par smut written by kiss less virgins whose only reason to keep on living is to expound their malignant thoughts on others. They have a deep hatred of women, the only other sex on the face of the Earth, who have, in their combined efforts decided to strike down all beta males but at the same time, it is women themselves, who are in the very center of their plays; harems being the ultimate locus of their secular desires. The progression fantasy reader is thus, by his definition, fighting a social oppression and their life's work is to preach their evangelium to other men, who have not yet found the truth of women. In short, in their love and hate for women, they have forsook real women in their lives and have settled for crude caricatures mimicking their ideal woman; a creature of no autonomous thought, a being of a singular desire — to please the litRPG man. Like a dog worship's its owner, the anime-man demands the respect of women non-existent.

The only way one could prove that would be to ask some question about the book that you could not easily answer by googling. Anything else is just taking people's word for it. I could list here all the books I've read and stand on my shelves but that wouldn't accomplish anything now would it?

>What would a true question look like then?

One should be able to word the question so that answers are not found explicitly i.e., I couldn't find the answer by even downloading the book and using the search function. Take Prince of Nothing for example. If I asked what was the color of Akka's eyes, you'd find it in a heartbeat. But if I asked "Are the Cishaurim damned?" then I'd be able to gauge your knowledge of the book in more detail.

The next chapter in the book starts with the epigraph:
>God created Arrakis to train the faithful.
>—from “The Wisdom of Muad’Dib” by the Princess Irulan
Which is about 57 % into the book and this chapter follows the death of Jamis.

The guide is good, and if you enjoy reading Dune, I recommend reading all six of Frank's books. That being said, reading the books will make you enjoy the films less, because the films are no match for the books and for the most parts don't do the books justice.

>I don't know much about fantasy webnovels or comics
Well, compared to traditionally published western literature... Well, there is no proper comparison. Perhaps an allegory will do.
Imagine you have a choice, a well made movie versus a high school play. Or perhaps you could listen to some artist on spotify or hear one of your amateur friends play a guitar. Maybe you could choose between a car made by one person or a BMW. In short, webnovels are, for the most part, long, neverending shit, that is unedited, full of plotholes (because authors have not outlined it thorougly) and constant branching of plots and things happening. They are not works of art, rather, they are trains of thought. While a traditionally published novel is a work of art that has taken couple of years to write and edit, webnovels push out chapters weekly or monthly with no end in sight. It's a public view into one man's jerking. The quality of self published smut is known well to be invariably bad while with traditionally published western works the quality is generally better and you can find genial works much, much, much more often than you'd find in some dark corner of the internet where some machine translated chinese shit exists.

I find it amusing that nowadays in /sffg/ there pervades this idea that just because something is "memed" it must be bad. A couple years back, Bakker was all the rage — for a long time after The Unholy Consult was published people were discussing at length the intricacies of his works. No wonder then, people used to vote him their favorite author here by a landslide.
>Something happened then?
Yes, like tides changes, so do generals. Old timers went away and new friends came along, but the discussion of Bakker never seized but took other forms. There were fights between Sandersoys and Bakkerchads, Sanderson eventually losing the battle for literary merit and even now its accepted Brandon is a hack, while Bakker is said to be the king.
>How did we end up him being a meme?
He is a meme, but depending on whom you ask you get different answers. While the Bakker discussion continued, new people supposed that the author must be controversial and better yet avoided. The truth of his meme is however, that he is a brilliant author and it is the biting irony of time that can change a divided group's perception of a single man, especially when that group is a ever changing. Such is then the unfortunate fate of a new fag who comes here just to disregard Bakker outright; being spared his prosaic genius. Like the ebb and flow of ideologies according ot Hegelian dialectics, the Bakker discussion is now erring on the favor of his haters, but I have an inkling that in the years to come, his place as a cult classic returns once again.
>TL;DR
Bakker is one of the best contemporary fantasy writers, and his status as the locus of discussion has been perverted in the course of time to such degree, people don't take recommendations concerning him seriously.

Lmao, tradfags are deluded. I read hundreds of trad fantasy books before I started webnovels and you know how many trad books I've read since? Only few. To think a popular trad book is that much better than a popular webnovel is utter delusion that makes anyone in the know laugh at you. 'Work of art' my ass, I do agree that a thought-out book is better than a webnovel in SOME aspects, mostly those that matter the most to a truly worthy work of art, but there's a reason why men no longer read tradfantasy. Because it's not noticeably better and webnovels are more compelling.

Market doesn't lie. If tradbooks are obviously better, than why do people read webnovels and self-pub instead? Why are there new companies and other kinds of businesses that focus on editing webnovels and providing authors with audiobook version of their medium to reach wider audiences? Because tradpub is utterly consumed by culture war and people checked out. It's the same thing that happened with comics, manga swallowed the audience. Marvel and DC are on the rock-bottom.

The incessant seething of tradfags who can't comprehend why people don't want to read published trash, prefering to read 'unedited, long and full of plotholes' webnovels is a wonderful. Clueless NPCs that rage and scream because the system they live in cannot account for people leaving and creating their own spaces when the original ones no longer provided them with what need.

Absolutely hilarious, seethe more you precious tradfag retard.

Leviathan Wakes, The Expanse #1 - James S.A. Corey [Daniel Abraham & Ty Franck] (2011)

I tried reading this in 2011, but I wasn't interested enough at the time after reading a few chapters. Four years later I began watching the TV series and watched all of it as it aired. I've also read many of Abraham's other books during that time. Now that it's roughly a year later after both the tv and book series have ended, I thought that I'd try again. The book has now joined the evergrowing list of critically acclaimed and/or highly popular series that it seems I didn't give enough chance. This is the first time I've finished the first book of a series after finishing its tv series. Surprisingly, I wasn't bothered at all by knowing everything that would happen. I almost always go to the source material first for tv series, but not movies. I'm interested to see how that goes as I read more.

This is a space opera series in which both authors empathetically say that it isn't hard SF. For the most part it tends towards a relatively conservative realism of what human society may be like a few centuries from now in terms of technological and social progress, as compared to most science fiction I've seen. For the first few books everything stays within the solar system. The authors have stated that they wanted this series to be about when humans first began exploring beyond the solar system. The only thing that bothers me is the populations of the planets and moons, 30 billion for Earth, 9 billion for Mars, and other absurd numbers elsewhere. The reasons for these numbers are given later in the tv series, which I assume are the same in the book, and are highly unsatisfactory.

The story alternates between two viewpoints, even when they're literally feet apart from each other. One is a self-righteous idealist with a savior complex on a merchant vessel who finds himself pushed into stellar events. The other is a cynical and nihilistic detective who becomes obsessed with a case that becomes his sole reason for living. The cast of characters are quite enjoyable and there aren't any that I disliked, as I think they're well-written and developed. In terms of plot it means the former is escaping from a series of disasters while trying to save the solar system and the latter is pursuing an obsession.

It's difficult for me to compare the first book and the first and second seasons six/seven years out, so I'll just say that they have their own strengths and weaknesses. I don't mind the changes the TV series made of what I've read so far. The characters in the book feel better, particularly in terms of their humanity and emotionality. There's also considerably more worldbuilding details and the inner monologue. I may come to like the book series more by the end. I'm highly motivated to enjoy this series. I very much want to like it despite it not quite being what I ideally want, but it's both close and rare enough though that it suffices.

Matt Dinniman on self publishing in /scifi/

"The first book I wrote that was actually self published was Dominion of Blades, and I made more money the first week it was out than in my entire career before that combined, including all the prizes, pro fees from short stories, and three trad published books. The world has changed. I don't think a large publisher will ever make sense in this genre until they can understand the rapid release requirements. Some of the new smaller presses (Like Aethon and Mountaindale) understand, but a big New York house is too cumbersome gain a foothold in this world.

That said, if I ever publish another standalone book, I will consider going back to trad publishing."

Mistborn is pretty good, though I read it when I was a teenager I iirc. I was focused mostly on the magic system which is interesting and the world has some depth to it. Felt more developed overall than Elantris and the second mistborn series(which I think I only read the first book or two of) feels a lot more alive, but I have always been a sucker for fantasy Wild West stuff.

In the book timeline they went all the way up to the grandchildren of Han and Leia Solo (which is roughly 45 years after the OT). The Legacy comics jumped even further ahead and went 150+ years past the OT with Luke's great grandson and Han and Leia's great great granddaughter being the main characters.

>the original Thrawn trilogy was pretty good but were any other parts of it worth reading?

The X-Wing novels are all pretty great. There are also some really great prequel era novels like Darth Plagues and the Darth Bane Trilogy. But for post ROTJ stuff the pinnacle is the NJO (New Jedi Order). It's a 19 book series that gets some flak for having weird antagonists but it's definitely worth your time. It was originally planned as the ending for the post ROTJ timeline and it shows because everything after it is just crap. Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi that followed it are barely readable imo and only worth it if you really want to see where everyone ended up before the buyout happened.

Finished The Pastel City, first novel of the Viriconium stories. And I won't be reading any others. It's similar to Wolfe and Vance, but without the imagination, the characters, pacing or beauty of those two. I do understand now why it's almost never talked about.

You got plenty more. Lyonesse, Dying Earth, Book of the New Sun, Solaris, A Scanner Darkly, Fifth Head of Cerberus, Conan. For post 2000 John C. Wright is pretty decent, his recent Superluminary is top quality pulpy science fiction that somehow manages to have planet system sized human fleets fight space vampires for galactic domination, but never gets too corny and manages to be engaging over the entire course of the series while consistently bombarding you with more and more insane concepts.

I think there's just a very firm disconnect between the two, with modern writing almost fetishizing obsessing over characters and their dramas over actual narrative, story, setting, etc. It's why new readers have problems getting into older genre entries be they SF or Fantasy.

you're complaining about someone not being there exactly when it hits page 10 so he can make a new thread. entire point is to have a thread visible, not one that's past the bump limit.

I read and enjoyed the first two, but I'd seen it compared to Vampire Hunter D rather than BotNS.
They were much more straightfoward and the far future setting was bleak rather than mysterious.
