Flashman fought on all four sides of the ACW IIRC. People usually forget his work with CSA aligned indians and the black revolutionary underground. But what they shouldn't forget is his role in racist anti-conscription Irish violence in the north. Because it isn't just edifying at the level of the dereduction of the social totality into its constitutive narratives of power, but it is a more classic radio rock feel that the ordinary reader can appreciate.

Take a look at Jeff Shaara. He writes fiction war books. There are 7 Civil War books including one by his father.

The first trilogy:

Read his Stories of Soldiers and Civilians, and mystery collection "Can such things be?". The Soldiers were head above the rest, one the best stories I've ever read. The particular setting doesn't matter, I'm not american and couldn't care less about their civil war. But the book is about people dragged into a conflict, and it is beautiful.

I'm pretty sure he was misspeaking then. Foote might've meant that "3 out of 4 became a casualty" as in dead, wounded, or captured, but 3 out of 4 dead would have been demographically catastrophic. It would have made the American Civil War more devastating than the Paraguayan War which it objectively was not.
