21463388 No.21463388 [Reply] [Original]

My dad and me were talking about old Tarkovsky movies and eventually he told me the premise of Solaris, which sounds extremely interesting. He also nonchalantly revealed the ending because he is a boomer with no concept of spoilers. Anyways, I thought instead of watching the Tarkovsky movie, I'd read the original novel by Stanislaw Lem, to get more into reading. I noticed the original has roughly 200 pages but the German translation has 282. Is that... normal? Did anyone here read it and if yes, would you say it is a good book suitable for beginners who maybe read one book every 3 years (but want to read more)?

Aw man, what a bummer. Nevermind bros, the amazon reviews complained and proved that the German translation sucks mad dick, translator apparently didn't even know Polish or German, like it's REALLY bad. The best English translation seems to be a 2011 one by Johnston but that one only ever released for the kindle and I don't have one... Sucks to be me, I guess, but if I have to choose between reading a horrible translation or not at all, I'll have to choose the latter.

I really wish they would release the Johnston translation as a physical book otherwise I won’t read it.

The Tarkovsky movie uses the novel as inspiration rather than a straightforward adaptation. You can watch the movie and read the book.

I have this pocket book version, I really enjoyed it. I think Tarkovsky is a hack who ruined the book.

I think it's one of the best sci fi stories there are. It manages to conjure something actually awe inspiring and otherworldly in the communication attempts.

I really like it too anon. You should still read the book. You'll like it.

its really good, i don't read much sci-fi but its my favourite sci-fi novel.
both movies miss the point of the novel in completely different ways.
the prose is not (as i recall) a great draw so i don't think it would suffer too much from a mediocre translation. i read it (in english) before 2011 in some mass-market edition and whatever translation that was was fine (though if the german one is truly dogshit i guess i can't speak for it.)

it doesn't really seem to me that there are any other lem novels, or stories, that capture the mystery and intrigue of solaris. they all seem to either fall into
>whimsical, sillie little tales about galactic knights or whatever
>overly dry, philosophical works (that don't mingle this with the narrative and mystery that solaris does)
is that so? can anyone suggest any that do strike the same vein as solaris? i'll even accept books with a similar vibe by other authors, the only one i can think of that's even close is annihilation.

German translations are often longer than the original English texts just due to the nature of the German language. German often has long words where English has short ones etc.
>>21464384
He himself hated it, so no wonder. The production had some problems as well. Tarkovsky and the lead actor didn't like each other. The long car scene in Japan was only put into the film so he could get a grant from the Japanese state.
