I tried reading the phenomenology of spirit but its an incomprehensible word salad...am I a brainlet or is hegel that bad of a writer? How can I prepare myself to comprehend it? Or should I just find an explanation of it by someone else?

He’s notorious for being difficult and not doing the best job of writing in the most efficient manner but it’s going to be difficult regardless if you’re not used to reading philosophy.

As with any philosophy text, read extremely slow and make sure you understand what each sentence is saying before you move onto the next. Make frequent annotations on the meaning of words that you don't know and summaries of ideas across sentences/paragraphs. Don't be afraid to look up outside help but try to understand as much of it as you can on your own.

You suppose Hegel is a pseudonym? Like maybe the guy means that he's haggling.

Read and understand at least Descartes, Hume, Kant, some Aristotle first. Then read it with a secondary text/guidebook.

Yeah, it really is word salad if you don't know the background. It's not like one of Plato's dialogues where you can just jump in. He's also a bad writer.
