The characters represent full grown adults. The themes Schultz hit on grew tiresome after a few decades, but he kept it up well past its prime. Garfield suffers the same situation.

Calvin captures the essence of childhood much better. That’s just its theme. And towards the end, Watterson got tired of the retread and retired it. Much like Larson, though he made bank on merchandising, and has sort of returned in recent years, where as Watterson has not.
