Wilson killed himself because he was gay and he couldn't tell his father.

I had a really useless English teacher in high school who thought he was John Keating. He actually once stood on his desk and recited "O Captain! My Captain!" with no apparent context or reason for doing so. He also screened "Dead Poets Society" on at least 3 occasions during the semester. The worst part was that this guy didn't even particularly like or understand English literature. He just wanted to be superteacher.

The premise of the superteacher is really played out and painfully unrealistic, but you shouldn't be hard on it, Dead Poets Society is one of the best resolved movies on the subject, with a precise direction by Peter Weir and solid performances. Even though I understand your edgy anti-edgy position, taken how cliché and naive the superteacher element sounds, the movie values aesthetics and emotion over the conservative and anesthetic structure of the 50's school system in a way no other movie could reach.

You should check out the Primes of Miss Jean Brodie. Its another super teacher flick, only about half way in you start to realize the superteacher in question is a fascist.
