1) is this worth a read
and
2) what pre-requisite works should I start with? i already ready confessions

Its an odd one. 1/3 interesting history of the immediate post fall roman empire, 1/3 a marriage of platonic metaphysics to Christianity, 1/3 autism trying to make genesis fit the historical record
I think if you've read Plato/Aristotle, the bible and some of the early church writers, you'll be good. A quick overview of the late roman empire, plus the post fall goth/hun bugaboo would help

Thanks Anon. I haven’t read any early church writers so I’ll start there before tackling this.

Not that anon, but I don't think it's all that necessary for you to read them. You can find a good edition of The City of God which will have annotations giving you that information anyway, and even if you don't read one of those editions, as you read, you can just quickly wikipedia any name or idea which you don't recognize. Aquinas is not really a difficult writer.
