Why did Hesse lead with a 30 page treatise on Harry Haller and the Steppenwolf? It's a deus ex machina that describes the core conflict of the story with no subtlety or grace, and I'm supposed to give it a pass because magical realism?

I got sperged at for saying I thought the ending involved psychedelics. The book is very good at times but also kind of retarded too, "magical realism" bruh this book is not unlike the story of a man who used too many drugs, the magic was barely there for me.

The ending 100% involved psychedelics. I picked this up again for inspiration for a book I'm preparing to write and I'm wondering what I liked about it in the first place. Maybe if I get past this 30 page treatise I'll remember what was good.

It’s actually a sophisticated way for him to talk abounharry haller while maintaining the first person voice of the journal entries

If he had said I Harry haller am the steppenwolf and a steppenwolf is this and that it would have been incredibly stupid. By putting it into a pamphlet he was able to put it into another voice. Very clever solution

Currently reading it. I'm at page 190 put of 250 in my edition. The book only really grabbed my attention around page 120. Definitely a slow start, but once he meets Hermine the pace picks up considerably

Would you recommend Steppenwolf to an anon who quite enjoyed Siddhartha?

That's not what deus ex machina means.

I think Narciss and Goldmund is better and also closer to Siddharta

I would. Hesse has a pretty different voice and tackles themes and ideas from a perspective not a lot of other writers do.
