What's your opinion on this, /lit/? There is a gazillion of books and spin offs in this series and I really like the lore but the writing is shit and the pacing is awful. Should I read on? I read 5 books and kind of gave up but I'm thinking about trying again.

It's not actually a good book; reading at times more like a lecture than fiction.

I'll give the author props for this at least: regular sci-fi always assume rational contact with aliens to be possible, but here, we see man as he most likely would be; resentful over not being able to communicate with the alien at all.

The games are exceptionally good, but some require mods to be palatable. In any case they are not exactly what you could expect after reading the book. The games feel much more like a post apocalyptic shooter and they are extremely good at it. The atmosphere is absolutely unique and no other game has even come close to anything like it.

Also watch the movie, it is free on youtube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3hBLv-HLEc

Once more it something quite different on its own.

desu I liked the book the least of the three. For me it was not focused enough on the grim reality within the zone. The ending did not feel very satisfying

Are they Christian literature? Is the author Christian? Do the characters in the book believe in Christianity, or an allegorical presentation thereof? Do they promote Christian morals or doctrines?
If the answer to any of these questions is "no", then I don't care. I am sick and tired of reading about boring generic fantasy "gods", or fantasy inspired by Greek, or Egyptian, or Indian, or whatever mythology, or overtly atheistical fantasy literature, or even worse: anti-Christian fantasy. At this point, the most creative and thoughtful /sffg/ comes from Christians (e.g. Stephen Lawhead), or at least people who have an honest understanding of Christians (e.g. Wayne Barlowe).

Do you want an honest answer? Because the truth has nothing to do with wokeness or feminism or niggers or anything, at least not directly.
The real answer is that post-modern, post-ironic society has become anti-natalist to the point of directing their anti-natalism out of the womb. Society HATES children, and anything that can possibly be perceived as childlike. Thus all fantasies have to be grimdark and super serious, in order not to be denigrated as "childlike" fantasies. Gone are the days of Barbie and He-man. And. ironically, the post-ironic insincerity of society makes honest, forthwright, direct stories impossible to tell; everything has to be drowned and saturated in layer upon layer of superfluous subversive subtext that hides any possible meaning you could construe from it until it's lost in an inane self-deprecating miasma of millennial malaise.
This depressed and socially isolated society cannot bear to read something as simple and clean and clear as a musclebound barbarian chopping monsters' heads off; they have to turn it into a politically topical fish-out-of-water sitcom.

Why exactly is this and how did it manage to grab so tight a hold on the public consciousness, do you know? Any books you could recommend me on this?
>Thus all fantasies have to be grimdark and super serious, in order not to be denigrated as "childlike" fantasies.
I've noticed this particularly among anime/manga fans or even fans of older western cartoons/comics and movies. They simply cannot engage with media of any form without going out of their way to read some vague subtext into children's media whether or not it was intended. Of course, children's media is not always devoid of a political message, often state-sponsored propaganda, but really they seem unusually eager to find it in the most odd places, as if the absence of it would mark a series as being worse. It's because of their fear of being suspected of having left in them even a drop of childlike innocence then, that they make the effort to over-explain everything they choose to read or watch, I assume. They require justification for their interests. I've even seen people suddenly have a change of heart, excited over the possibility of having something new, not exactly to them, but to their peers; Something acceptable for their peers to know they watch, after it gains popularity. I guess because they don't have to put up as much of a front anymore. A (not so) recent example being when Netflix picked up Neon Genesis Evangelion, which of course isn't like the stories they pile false narratives onto. It'd be hard to even misconstrue it as not having a "message" regardless of how lame it may be, and yet they even give that show the same treatment they do of children's cartoons, that is pushing more meaning onto it than there ever was meant to be. Thanks for the non-joke response.

I read the book about five years ago, and there's also a humanoid fox in it kek It's not a particularly good book, but as anon mentioned the dragon is pretty cool. There's also a scene where the protag has to go through a series of trials to become a wizard/sorceress or whatever the fuck, and one of them is surviving inside of a castle against their teacher for some period of time, and it got pretty wild from what I remembered. I just found it weird that there's this whole setup exposition dump thing about airships living in the sky in the post apocalypse, politics, resource management and shit, and then they leave the ship and literally never go back until the end and nothing mentioned ever comes up or matters because the entire rest of the book is literally just stalker, but less interesting since it's 90% zombies. And I think they talk about other shit that's more interesting and esoteric, but go out of their way to avoid all of it. Which is logical I guess, but not very exciting.

What have you fags been reading? I just finished Gormenghast. I bet you who jerk off to prose would love that book. I liked it well enough. It took me some time to finish however. The book reads like a bunch of humorous skits strung together with a meandering continuity that can hardly be called a plot. But I liked the quirkiness. Very Addams family in that respect. The lack of drama made it so I wasn't starved to see what happens next. So it wasn't a book to binge on.

I'm in the mood to read something else. But I don't know what. I'm not in the mood for the Gormenghast sequels right now. I want something with an actual plot.

So I decided to give pic related a try. Looking at goodreads reviews, they called out the author for being a Nazi piece of shit. That naturally got me interested, since the book is about killing fantasy monsters and monsters from the folktales. Maybe he had his vampires all be jews or something similar?
Turns out that was the regular reaction of liberal parts of fantasy story community for the author saying that conservative stories are being underrated.
In the story, one of the main villains is a Portugese man who conquered the Mayan temple and turned into some evil being due to Old Ones, yes from Lovecraft, he controls powerful vampires, the main one is a Nazi.
Then to add to the colourful cast, our protagonist has an old Jew inside of his head, a black man and hooker are part of his team.
So what about our protagonist, is he a racist? He is a mutt by his own words 'my ancestors got around, the race is hard to pinpoint', paraphrasing but close to his own words. He has no problems with anything really, except he hates Grant.
What is so special about this guy you might ask? He is the current boyfriend of his crush, one great female who is a gun tottin badass who kills monsters and comes from a lineage of monster hunters who own this group of monster hunters. Yep, it's a human vs monster novel, and that dude is simping hard. As in every time he is around our great female lead, everything revolves about him loving her.
As is tradition, she doesn't refuse his advances, yet is adamant she is together with Grant, who is described as perfect Prince Charming, but is seen as our MC as a pompous prick, so you know how it goes. Our MC is ultra special talanted in shooting, a very important thing for a Hunter and from the fight scenes, the only important thing. He and Grant are at odds and in the first mission Grant leaves him to die in a situation where only plot armour can save him, which it does. This surprisingly doesn't instantly fuck over Grant, and changes nothing really, but he isn't present for the good part of the novel. When he does reappear again, he is kissing the female lead, cucking our dear MC still, but then couple of pages later Grant gets kidnapped by a vampire and his fate, while I haven't read it (I read 2/3 of the novel so far), its already set up to be either death with redemption, or turning into a vampire to be killed. Yey MC. Female lead instantly hops on MC's dick, kissing him not even a day after Grant gets missing. Yey for MC.
What is so special about our MC, except being a perfect killing machine? He is set up to be the Chosen One, like the evil guy was when he was alive.. The old jew guy living in his head that I mentioned? He allows him to see memories of the evil guy, and gives him astral vision. Also saves him from drowning early on by interacting with his gas canister..
All in all, I feel like I have read this novel before, which means it's just one of many trash novels out there. Thank you for reading my blogpost.

I've read a bit more of this series than you have, and honestly it felt like wasted potential. I like monster hunting stories, but this series is yet another one that gets bogged down with overplayed MUH LOVECRAFT shit that's just uninteresting. I am so sick of lovecraftian bullshit, it's incredibly boring.
As far as Grant goes, he actually remains a recurring character iirc. He actually gets quite a bit of development. A recurring theme with this series is that side characters are always more interesting than the protagonist, who just always has miraculous plot armor.
There's a couple of plots that I still remember liking. The one with the soviet werewolf was good and the one about the Fed guy named Frank was good, but they're mainly side stories and the main plot always drags the series down.

Seriously, I cannot fucking stand all this boring ass lovecraftian shit, it's the worst trend imaginable.

Tell me this at least, how much ebil Nazi and pure Jew nonsense is there by the end and in later books. You could check out Twig, which is a webnovel by Wildbow that is very much bio-punk. The story takes place in the early 20th century, with the premise that the world went through a life sciences revolution a century before, much like the industrial revolution. Of course there would be deep transhumanism books, but majority of them are pure shit fanfictions that genetic engineering, cybernetic upgrades and development of technology could bring. As in author's fetishes he unleashes upon the readers under the veil of advanced technology and science. Comparing it to the most popular transhumanit work of fiction, or at least the one which places major emphasis on that, all in order to try to discredit what I'm saying is all very kek.
>It's almost as if its fantasy, a genre of speculative fiction involving magical elements, typically set in a fictional universe that doesn't adhere to our own?
>It's almost as if
Fucking limpwristed faggy way of writing, not that the things you argue about aren't revealing about your perspective on things. And yes, seeing such obviously fantastical things far removed from reality is jarring when the good majority of setting is based on reality as >>21426765 said, and such fantastical elements are picked and chosen from the list of female power fantasies, for the lack of the better term. Not that it's hidden, but the constant barrage of
>'Who says a woman can't fight like a man'
>'You fight well for a woman'
>The plain superiority men in fiction feel when they know they are about to engage a woman in a fight
And similar moments that go for a lot of works featuring a warrior female, all but directly say the common view of that world. And if that setting has women being pregnant and getting monthly periods, as well as retaining the physical and psychological differences between men and women of our world, the combat power of women in that fantasy setting would be lower than a man's. So even then a kickass female would be an exception, ignoring the view of the author and what he wanted to accomplish with such a character. To remove such biological features in order to up the powerlevel of women in the work would leave them as something that is not a woman, making this whole point mute but whatever, go jerk of to your favorite queeeeen and slay.

I said that to mock you. Any Idiot that clamors for realism in a genre that’s unrealistic and fantastical in its foundation is someone who can just lean back and read a book that’s for children and young adults.

Blue Jean - Sneed Bowie
[Chorus]
Sometimes I feel like
(Oh, the whole human race)
Jazzin' for Blue Jean
(Oh, and when my Blue Jean's blue)
Blue Jean can tempt me
(Oh, somebody send me)
Somebody sent me
(Oh, somebody send me)

{Hook}

[Chorus]
Sometimes I feel like
(Oh, the whole human race)
Jazzin' for Blue Jean
(Oh, and when my Blue Jean's blue)
Blue Jean can tempt me
(Oh, somebody send me)
Somebody sent me
(Oh, somebody send me)

It's the truth, regardless of what you meant. If the work uses our world as a basis, not talking about flying lizardmen Eskyrm that have no gender and reproduce through mind-link to the higher power of nature Riim, but much closer to 'our world but magic' setting, then the point stands. And it's the only point worth talking about when you have 'women but strong', since a world so far removed from ours doesn't impact the reader when something so jarring happens, he knows what he is in for.
Even if men and women of that world, close to ours at a glance, posses the characteristics that would make women equal in strength to men, you would need a writter who can balance the scales of fiction and reality and try not to bring their view of our reality into the fantastical world as wish fulfilment, destroying their own cannon.

Dude, I’m not getting into this stupid fucking argument. It’s fantasy and unrealistic, either accept that or go to a different genre that accedes your realismfaggotry. Anyways this is my last post for you. Screech all you want how fantasy is unrealistic and other dumb shit.

I want to strongly recommend Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman if you are into dark fantasy and low fantasy novels.
It takes place in the middle ages in France where war, contagious diseases and monsters/demons completely fucked the country. The protagonist is an aged knight who got thrown out of the order and joined a group of bandits. One day he meets a cute little girl who says she can talk to angels and needs their help to go across the entire country, she can't tell why exactly, but an angel told her. The bandit group wants to rape her so the knight kills them all and decides to escort the little girl, not knowing if she really has supernatural powers or is just fantasizing stuff because she is traumatized or something. On their way really early on they also meet an alcoholic monk who joins them too because he is the only survivor of the monastery anyway and his alcohol is running low.
On their way they have to fight off hunger, thirst and the weather. The monster/demon encounters are relatively rare, but if they happen they are absolutely terrifying, this is where the horror/fantasy elements come into play. The protag is a very capable knight but he is getting older and he is only human and can do so much. The athmosphere is absolutely crushing and hopeless and in the book it says several times the only person who can turn this around would be God but he isn't doing anything. Also it is a great motivator to keep reading so you find out what happens when the little girl reaches her destination like the angel supposedly told her to and you really root for all characters.
All in all I really enjoyed this a ton and it gripped me from the start until the very end and I am a reader that it easily turned off.

I'm halfway through this, and so far I'd say Between Two Fires is worth the read even though it isn't consistently good. The writer is timid here and there, albeit never for too long since it's not a slow mover. However, sometimes the fucker hits these strides that make it all worth it (the castle scene was nuts), and the dialogue with the girl is often charming. Tone is grim overall, but he has the writing chops to drop nuggets of soul and hope throughout effectively, and all the character voices are distinct.
