The grandeur if the Gospel is that this world is both totally meaningless and totally meaningful. It is that what you do to yhe poor matters but not what you do to yourself. This is totally wrong because it makes Christianity seem entirely focused on the afterlife itself versus more importantly your attitude towards it. Also, none of those matter ultimately. The old die and so do babies, but to not try despite its impossible is the sin. "The poor you have always with you but not me you do not." - Christ.

It's a popular book that is presumably wrong. These books likely more convincing than Dawkins, as Dawkins is rather ignorant and even in his own domain peddles his pet stupidity legitimised as popular knowledge making his betters as you put it 'seethe'. Also. There are three theories about why Christ died. One is the ransom payment one and didn’t really survive out of early Christendom in official church teachings.

I won’t sum it up here in detail but there is a very valid logic to Christian theology and I mean that quite literally unlike when the atheist says ‘logic and reason’. Google valid and sound logic. Those are precise terms.

The gist without speaking in a logical way is god creates man. Man is his highest creation. Man’s purpose is happiness. Happiness requires a certain ethic and that ethic coincides with divine. Man cannot succeed at this ethic on his own. God becomes man and accomplished this feat as a human being and offers it to the rest of the humans. It is necessary that this would happen.

I’m thinking someone already said to read aquinas. He does do an impressive job at summarizing all of this. And it’s even funnier that his genius is recognized in nearly every age going on 1000 years. And funnier yet, the atheists attack logic itself to try to get around his arguments rather than acknowledge they are good.

It’s a long road. And sadly you need to start with at least Plato because you need to understand Aristotle and really you need to understand logic in it’s pure form. So you could read Russell’s intro to mathematical philosophy too.

But you can’t have this conversation at an intellectual level without logic in my opinion. Otherwise you are just doing poetry and having an emotional reaction to it.
