Chapters are just a way to segment a novel
Sometimes a chapter will be a hundred pages long because it's supposed to represent a larger episode in the narrative(Ulysses)
Sometimes an author uses chapters to segment scenes so you end up with lots of chapters (Moby Dick)
Sometimes the chapters are used to show splits in the persepctive of the narrative, so you end up with as many chapters as there are point of views (just about anything complicated Faulkner wrote)
Sometimes you end up with no chapters at all because the author wants you to read the novel as one cohesive whole
It's a completely arbitrary divider that only exists to provide an illusion of structure, a tool of the authors whims and no more
