Have you ever gone to the movies alone? I saw The Lighthouse alone, it was the first and only time I've ever been to the movies by myself. Kinda sad because it was also the last movie I saw at the theater 1 block from my apartment (and it had $5 tickets for uni students holy fuck it was the god tier location) before it closed due to covid, and eventually for good. It's a different experience though. I'd strongly recommend everyone go to the movies solo at least once in their lives.

It seems all my past desires were of no concrete nature. They were merely escapist scenarios, born out of frustration and deep dissatisfaction with my then place in the world, not true ambition. Well then, what is my ambition. I, despite the current placidity, naturally gravitate to the thought. “greatness. I want to be exceptional and I want to be envied and I want to be perceived and remembered”. Maybe this desire is an old reflex. I may have made peace with past failure but it seems that i have yet to accept how ordinary and unspecial i seem to be.
Like a gangrenous limb that finally fell out, the last 6 years and their unceremonious finality have sloughed away leaving a rot in my soup that i may have to deal with for the rest of my life.

To me this is very tangible. I'm a first generstion american. All my family still lives in Europe, but I grew up away from all them. I was raised in a "diverse" major metropolitan area. Given that I'm white, the only real culture I could grasp was that of radical individualism. Its so surreal living around ethnic enclaves, mingling with them but never being a part of any.
I went back to Europe a few years ago to meet my family. I did get a sense of that racial memory, where it felt like the lityle village was a place I'd seen in my dreams. But I'm not one of them and I never could be. I'm much too atomized and much too urban. Coming back to the city and being invisible, a face in the crowd, a lone Wolf, a Jünger style Anarch was very comforting. Describing that feeling to my aunt evoked envy from her because she hates living in a small rural village where everyone knows your every move. But then again,she was from a big city and is only my aunt by marriage so she probably had a similar upbringing.
I've tried to replace a sense of ethnic belonging with spiritual belonging by joining a church. Spiritual belonging is real and valid, and a higher reality, but the displacement in worldly terms still disrupts my proper integration spiritually.

As someone who "grew up" on the internet from the late '90s onward, I sometimes wonder if it's easier for me to distinguish between WWW and IRL than it is for the people who viewed it as a novelty for a long time, until it became embedded in daily life with smartphones and social media (the latter of which I tend to avoid as much as possible).

When a family member passed away, the funeral home (without consulting us) set up an online obituary where people could post their condolences and "light" digital candles. It struck me as completely bizarre, if not downright tacky, but to them it was just another completely ordinary part of the preparations.

We lived about 400 miles apart and I didn't visit her enough because I had to take care of my parents, couldn't leave them alone + i had no means of transportation. And I was closer with my friends than I was with her, eventually choosing to side with them whenever the expected ultimatum happened. 7AM and a new day of dreaded work begins anew. The world is, for the next 8 hours, the work I most perform. It is drab work and could be performed by another easily, I'm replaceable and the hypothetical other in my place would do the same, better or worse, as me. It's drab but it is also labor. Labor that exists and motivates me, financially, to complete it. One day it will be non-existent as it will be replaced by AI. It probably already is. The labor won't exist but the work will be done. Realizing this, the work takes on a different shade. It ceases to be dreadfulness and turns into a blessing. The work is meaningless but labor isn't. Labor is purposefulness in distilling. Giving whilst receiving immediately from the constant positive feedback loop. It's realizing that i am privileged for being slave wagie, while realizing others in the future will envy me for doing these menial tasks. I am meaningless as my work but i have purpose as the labor force.
Felt dread, now feeling blessed after exorcising these thoughts. The world gets as much as we can give and get from the world as much as we can take. Today i take meaning from the world and in return it receives rambling platitudes.
