VALIS is about Philip K Dick wondering whether he is schizophrenic or someone who has been part of a slip in the spacetime continuum as he believes to have knowledge of Koine Greek and esoteric knowledge from what would be deemed a 'past life.' He finds out that he may be inside (not so much a Matrix simulation) but a computer that is the universe, VALIS, which stands for Vast Active Living Intelligence System. He talks to characters that are him in some sense, but which allow him to talk about painful autobiographical experiences from a distance. There's a lot more to it but I recommend you read it.
