In Islamic areas of Africa, AIDS are not a problem, and the society is much more restrained. This novel, about a Muslim from Sudan who accounts himself before another who is horrified, is meant as a mirror to Heart of Darkness: the proud and noble African goes to the west and degenerates into a disgusting, animal whose life revolves around sex and alcohol.

A war memoir about a man who began fighting Russians at fifteen and helped found a group of vigilantes later who would rule Afghanistan, then went to Guantanamo Bay

Why do you think it is vile for it to be considered virtuous for a wife to be obedient? Certainly Christianity stresses obedience as a path to heaven as well, see The Ladder of Divine Ascent. The difference is simply Islam stresses is more for women whereas Christianity does for men.

Pic rel is rather interesting. In Christianity, there is discussion on faith alone, grace alone, faith and good works, but in Islam, pleasing your husband is one way to get into heaven. It's good works, and also faith, but judged by a human, not a divine authority. That's interesting.
Thanks for creating this thread, OP. I'm not particularly inclined to study the Islamic world. My interest in Semites tends to the ancient, but unlike other scholars, I think the Medievals are important to our understanding of the Ancients. As such, I need to read up on the stuff I wasn't taught in school.
