Reading the New Testament since I've never done it before and I thought advent would be a good time. Just finished Matthew and Mark and it's really interesting how it's written. The story moves super fast and the way it's done makes you keep thinking about it. Reading from my 1956 KJV so it has all the good stuff that got taken out in the NLT.

My favorite part so far is when Peter tries to walk on the water like Jesus and he does it a little bit and then falls in the water and Jesus pulls him out. I found it interesting how Jesus just asks his apostles to follow him and they do it without any convincing in a modern book the authors would have dragged out that section super long with probably a chapter for each apostle but in the bible he gets all 12 in like 2 pages

Yeah, people take for granted that the Bible was written by actual good authors. What is interesting is that Jesus walking on water calls back to Genesis 1:1-2 where the Holy Spirit moved across the waters.

It's the same with most of the famous stories in the old testament. The story of Cain and Abel is literally only a verse.

If you read Exodus alongside Matthew you will notice the parallels and deeper meaning:
Both Jesus' family and the Israelites escape to another country to evade a tyrant leader (Herod/Pharaoh). Matthew 2:15 references this "Out of Egypt I called My Son" (Jesus and Israel being God's son)
Jesus is baptized in Matthew 3. This is equivalent to the Israelites being baptized crossing the Red Sea.
Jesus is attacked by Satan in Matthew 4. This is equivalent to Amalek attacking Israel after they've escaped the Egyptians (Exodus 17)
Moses defeats Amalek by holding up the staff/the word of God. Jesus defeats Satan by quoting from the word of God. Then Jethro comes and ministers to Moses (Exodus 18), and after Jesus defeats Satan, angels came and ministered to him (Matthew 4:11). God then gives the Law at Mount Sinai, and in Matthew 5 what do we have? The Sermon on the Mount.

No it’s not, it’s typology. The sea is used throughout the Bible as opposition. Moses parts the Red Sea, the sea of gallele, etc. It’s even promised in revelation that there will be no more sea.
It’s called tracing the types

Yeah Jesus is Gods son and Israel was called Gods son, but obviously they failed. Jesus is doing the job they could not do. Exodus 4:23
