His wife is painted with too harsh a brush. She has no character beyond thwarting his hopes out of spite.

Me too. He was so passive at home. He loved his daughter and his little study room and let his wife totally fuck both up. I cant even fathom being that spineless. He should have just went and died in the trenches. LOMAX RULES

Not every narrator is some duplicitous trickster. He painted himself in a despicable light. Do you not believe a single thing a narrator says? that's ridiculous. Stoner isnt dishonest and I dont see why you would think he is. You don't have to be so resolutely contrarian about everything you know, it doesn't make you look smart.

>Stoner isnt dishonest and I dont see why you would think he is.
He is, a little bit:
>his youth is protrayed more awkward than it was, because he's ashamed of it
>his marriage is portrayed with more spite than it deserves, because he's got some resentment for his wife
>his work portrayed as more boring than it is, because he's tired of it

>> No.21322087

>>21322082
If he feels ashamed and spiteful and bored that means he is dude.
I said he was spineless at home, he was. He did let his wife ruin his favorite room in the house. He did let his relationship with his daughter deteriorate through inaction. None of that is refuted by you claiming 'le unreliable narrator'
You just listed a bunch of very valid reasons for those feeling. I dont see what you are trying to prove.

It's pretty good but I wouldn't say it's free of flaws. In all honesty I at times found it hard to emphasize with Stoner, I just didn't feel like I knew enough about him, along with the fact I didn't have enough detail about daily life. But I am a huge fan of super detailed books and enjoy Proust because of that. So take what I said lightly.

>>21320849
I would argue he didn't "let" her do anything. He just didn't have lots of experience with women and probably didn't know what to do I think.

>>21320858
I somewhat agree honestly. It was alluded to that she had a troubled upbringing, but I really wish they talked about it a lot more, would have made her more than a spiteful woman for no reason.

>You just listed a bunch of very valid reasons for those feeling. I dont see what you are trying to prove.
I'm a different anon, I only comment on Stoner not being a 100% accurate narrator - he doesn't straight up intentionally bamboozle the reader, but he does present and style things in a way that portray his feelings, which is ultimately good for the book.
>If he feels ashamed and spiteful and bored that means he is dude
Indeed.
