Op here. About halfway through. While it does go over Dostoyevsky’s life, equal amount of writing goes to explaining the times he lived it. It is very insightful and will make me appreciate 19th century literature even more. The book is a mix on Dostoyevsky’s life, Russian ideologies and politics, Russian culture and Russian history

Okay real question what's more true in translation, to have them rendered in the style of the time period on which they were written so as to be more in line with the originals, or to be modernized to bring in language that reflects terminology commonly used today which, arguably, better captures the reading experience of a contemporary to the writings publication. The language used is entirely different in both cases obviously.

I’ve only read two bad translations of the Russians; Myers and Garnett. The others are good. If you niggers spent more time reading than arguing and researching translations, maybe /lit/ would be bearable again. Dostoyevsky, Gogol, Tolstoy, Checkhov, etc all shine through Avsey, McDuff, PV, etc
