I am convinced dostoevsky was sent to prison because of how bad this book is

There was a strong sense of dyspepsia in the victorian era. It was a weakness of the bowels from execrable food quality and intolerable living conditions that made Dostoyevsky and Edgar Allen Poe evolve parallel world views on the opposite sides of the planet.

It really wasn't that bad anon. Remember that he was only 23 when he wrote it and was trying incredibly hard to be Gogol.
Still though, it was an interesting portrayal of severe social anxiety/paranoia, even if the actual plot driver was hokey Gogol derivative
