how do I not judge a book by it's cover when that's all there is to judge

Go to a library and read a few pages and read what people online said. Read a summary.

so you just ignore the cover and go 1 by 1 left to right on the shelf? i thought it was that simple but looking at all of the books sometimes gives me a sensory overload. Maybe I'm just being a fag

First of all I have a specific taste in art and movies.

Like: do you like scifi or romance or surreal or dystopic stuff? Action movies? Lord of the Rings or Interstellar?

From that you can find books in that genre. I like new authors because their language is more up to date. With that in mind it's much easier to find what I like.

Read the "Look Inside" portion on Amazon.

You should judge like that actually. Books that have nice covers generally are published by people who care.

Read the title and the name of the author. Did you make this thread because you were bored?
