I feel like this was happening to me everytime I'd read a chapter of Inherent Vice. And even though I actually remember the plot quite well I don't really know what the point of it was, which makes me think I completely forgot something important whilst reading.

Smart people purge useless inane material from their brain. It isn't beneficial to memorize that which has no utility. Lagan calls it a trash can brain if you do.

See.. stuff like this. I got absolutely no 'capitalism bad' from it. Not even 'war bad', despite the main characters all being hippies and the war being talked about from their perspective. It just didn't seem like it was criticising anything.

>>21301180
Well, the thing is that the plot is presented purposedly in a very convoluted way. Here's the gist of it.

A bunch of dentists, lawyers and real state developers gang together to monetize hippies and poor people. The idea is to sell them drugs, then sell them treatment for the addiction and a set of new theeth (since heroin makes your teeth fall out) assuming they'll relapse and will be stuck in that endless cycle. The problem arises when the daughters of some of those tycoons fall in that cycle.

In a way, you can say that the book is a critique on how the system, being an amoral entity, fagocites the counter-culture movement to make profit stopping at nothing. The system, if left unchecked will eat everything, including the children of the ones who are benefiting from it. Thus, capitalism=bad.

Because the plot, as I said, is purposedly presented in a convoluted way throught the eyes of a paranoid pothead and never really pierced together, except in a sort of allegoric way near the end of the book. The inherent vice of the title can be interpreted as the destructive consequences the system has that are an inherent part of it.

But now that you know, I'm sure you can see it on a reread if you're inclined to do so. A lot of postmodern literature requires an active reading from the audience, like putting the plot together themselves. If you wanna train yourself to be a more analytic reader, I'd suggest giving a shot to minimalism, like Carver, Cheever (to a degree) and Hemingway's short stories.

And don't forget to enjoy the process.
