21291597 No.21291597 [Reply] [Original]

I opened DFW's biography and was greeted with the worst opening sentence I've ever read.

>> No.21291610

>Every story has a beginning and this is David Wallace's.
Sounds like something I would write to inflate the number of words in an assignment.

>> No.21291622

>>21291597
Lol, chapter title is just as bad. What little I have read of DT Max's writing I have not been impressed by and this just enforces my aversion to this biography.

>> No.21291631

Anyone seen the movie based on this book?

It's absolutely cringeworthy, I really found it hard to take it seriously at all.

>> No.21291868

I hope the book will be worth reading, in the end. I expected more from an opening page then biography-by-numbers, jumping right into DFW's parents lives with average, milquetoast prose.

> "This is the first line of my novel lol," the writer thought to herself as she wrote the first line of her novel. The keys under her writer's fingers went clicky-clack as she typed the words you're reading now. "Phew, I'm getting hungry," she thought to herself, but also typed onto the page here, in this sentence. It was lunchtime.

Now it's the second worst opening you've ever read.

I wouldn't count on it. Not to long ago an anon attempted to prove me wrong with a page from the biography, Max literally represents hearsay as fact, the excerpt posted was along the lines of "this guy who knew Wallace has a friend that saw Wallace do something related." The irony was I did not even say it was true or untrue, just said it is something we will never know.

From the excerpts I have seen Max goes to absurd lengths to be objective and loses all objectivity in the process. There is probably some worthwhile solid information in there, but I can not see it really providing much insight into Wallace beyond the mundane facts of his life.

1) lol, an acronym for the phrase “laugh out loud,” not to be confused with similar acronyms like “rofl” (“rolling on the floor laughing”), “lmao” (“laughing my ass off”), or composites of such acronyms (such as “roflmao” (“rolling on the floor laughing my ass off”). I first encountered such terms when in rehab for the third time and met a fellow marijuana enthusiast with a penchant for internet posting. The novelty of such succinct yet evocative expressions of emotion immediately impressed me with their power, both for sincerity and for mockery.

DFW is just a penis with a thesaurus. Of the total 25 books by Pynchon wannabes I’ve read, Infinite Jest is far and away the worst, a novel so mind-bendingly clunky and self-indulgent that it’s hard to believe the author let it be published in this kind of shape.
