Is writing for videogames the same as writing for the porn industry?

I've written for an indie game. It was fun and fairly creative but very bottom line focused. You spend your day trying to inhabit the minds of dimwits and children. The industry has a "PROVE YOU WANNA WORK HERE, PROVE IT" thing where they manipulate and exploit callow young men, so it's a little similar to the gay porn industry, I guess.

How did you reconcile the differences between the player's want for freedom and the story and its constraining nature? How do you tell a story without ripping the player out of the game?

use the language of videogames.
AKA gameplay.

Tell the fucking story using the gameplay, It's like it's a revolutionary idea for most failed writers.

i'm no expert but i'd say the best way is to make it so the story is nor so much about the events of the game but events that happened prior to the game. the player is free to go where ever they like and everywhere they go they'll find something. either some grand scale world building lore or some small details about the lives of a few characters. that's how i see the appeal of games like new vegas or vmtb bloodlines.
