What author made you really get into reading and why? For me it's Cormac McCarthy, the way he describes settings, events, and things simply wows me every time. In contrast, I also love how simple, yet realistic a lot of his dialogue is as well.

The Once And Future King led me into the Arthurian tales, which then lead into other epics, which then leads to now - where I genuinely enjoy reading. The Goshawk is also great as well. Thank you, T.H. White.

F Gardner is now my favorite author after seeing his retarded YouTube show.

I have a lot but I’ll name drop Plutarch. To start off, I like his personality; he seems delightful, and I would have loved to hang out with him. Secondly his Lives benefits me in two ways; I learn about famous men, and there is a lot of wisdom throughout. The way he tried to find an underlying trait or characteristic for each person gives the bios a grander scope and almost a moral. Lastly I love some of his essays. On Contentment is one of my favorite essays from anyone. I’ve reread it often, especially when feeling blue, and it has never not helped me raise my spirits and pick my head up

It's not just the elemental force in his prose but if you have had the right life experience then McCarthy's themes will greatly resonate.

Another is DH Lawrence. I feel he is a kindred spirit. As far as prose stylists go, I think he is among the best. The way he depicts the inner workings and psychology of romantic relationships is second to none. Another anon said he portrays them in a fashion of almost an epic struggle. I found that very apt. I’m a sucker for the English countryside and coal mining stories so I enjoy many of his settings. The Rainbow is one of my favorite books and Sons And Lovers almost hit too close to home. I like his literary criticism and find his essays to be underrated. His NYRB collection is one I read often

Honestly? Suzanne Collins.
This isn't an endorsement, she just happened to write the first books I ever enjoyed as a young adult, which seeded my appreciation of reading.
Most of these other answers I have a hard time believing.

Another is a trio. I’ll group Emerson, Thoreau and Whitman together. I find them inspiring and try to take a lot of what they say to heart. For all who say society is in decline, these are the three to read. I try to read a little bit of at least one of them a week. They always raise my spirits and make me feel positive, inspired and confident in myself

Anonymous. Without a pinch of irony.
I mostly read fairy tales as a child so...
A more serious name would be Horacio Quiroga and then Alexandre Dumas.

Henry Miller is another. Not much I can say about him other than I find him inspiring, wise and a elixir for modern life. He is uneven but every book has a part that I needed to read and am a better person because of it. When he is on top of his game he is one of the best. Out of all the writers, he may have had the biggest impact on my life and outlook

Let me guess anon, your first author was some philosopher from the 6th century BC or some shit? Can you quote a paragraph about why I'm a faggot?
