I would put a caveat on starting with The Hobbit, it might be too childish for some adult readers. It's a fantastic children's book but a new reader might come to it with the wrong expectations.

There's also the Nature of Middle Earth which is Tolkien's notes on the metaphysics of the world and a load of extra trivia not published in History of Middle Earth. There's going to be a book that collects the writings on the second age but it'll just reprint previously published stuff.
