You're kind of right. Catcher is a masterpiece not because of plotting but because its central character is so perfectly realized. Anyway, you should read Nine Stories, it's a wonderful book also.

Pretty much this >>21272242.
The book hinges on what the character is thinking while experiencing relatively normal things for upper class kids like himself. He's dishonest but honest, impure but innocent, and he has no idea how to deal with anything that's happening in his life. Nobody has ever actually equipped him with the tools he needs to navigate his own emotions. And despite the fact that most can't actually relate to him, he's easy to relate with.

But you need to read it to truly appreciate Bojack Horseman, the epic of our era.

It’s a book about teenage angst. Of course nothing happens, that’s the point.

There are two types of people in this world. Those who identify with Holden's own awkward takes on the phony world outside, and even decades later realize they'll always hold true, and those who believe it's a "phase" of "teenage angst".

I read it once about 15 years ago, from what I remember it was about the loss of innocence, how everybody was unauthentic and corrupt.
It's about how he wanted to regain the state of hope he had while optimistically innocent and preserve children in this permanent state.
