Elantris did okay, but Mistborn was doing worse and his career was heading into midlister-at-best until Robert Jordan's widow happened to read Mistborn and liked it and his style enough to offer him the job to finish Wheel of Time.
One of the luckiest career breaks ever, and it's what lead to him getting Way of Kings published because his WoT trilogy brought in so much cash that Tor were willing to give him anything.

He's just an autistic Mormon who cranks out fantasy books. I applaud him for having a shared universe before it became popular, and actually letting each one stand on it's own with just hints of it being connected (until stormlight came out, which was full of connections but still played it well). >magic system, magic system

I'm kidding. Never read his work, but he seems like a nice dude who understands his way isn't the only way. I'll be honest, i have no desire to read his work, but i like his lectures and the magic system laws.

My personal approach to magic and sci fi is to dance around it. I think it loses it's mystique or outright is wrong in the case of sci fi tech. You could describe some properties, what it looks like, and what they use it for. You shouldn't really know how it works though. I think it can take away from the story.

I think magic like in Harry Potter is kinda retarded. It should be more ritualistic or shamanic or show up in beings, as in we don't know how this thing is magically or scientifically, but it is what it is. It should border on the edge of stuff we know and the unknown.

Think about a document you have to sign. This is kind of like a form of magic. You give it power, recognize that it represents something (many times something physical), and when you sign it it's like casting a spell in a sense. Obviously it has to go through a bureaucratic process too, but it behaves like it has magical properties.

That's just my personal opinion though.

He definitely didn’t do the shared universe thing before it became popular. Nerd circles already had comics and books like that.

Otherwise I agree. He’s very clear about what he likes and doesn’t try to pretend it’s some grand philosophical shit. He just likes writing stories and he’s happy that people like reading them.
Plus I respect anyone that follows the hard parts of their religion well.

WARNING IM ABOUT MENTION REDDIT: In the r/bookscirclejerk subreddit he actually made a post addressing them. Says he stumbled into the community and wrote about why he thought ironic hating was a dangerous path and stuff.

He missed the point about magic systems. The whole point of them is consistency for the author. The reader should never be totally clued in on how the underpinnings of magic works.

>> No.21241110

>>21241090
No, you missed the point. He likes to use magic as chekov's magic. So he shows you exactly how it works, then uses it in a clever way later without breaking any of the established rules, to solve mega-important plot threads without it seeming like hand waving. Not saying that's how magic should be done, but that's how he likes to do it, and changing it would lessen the impact of several important moments in his fiction. It's like the fantasy equivalent of hard sci-fi.

Also the guy is a huge control freak, he always has to be the head mod/admin of whatever discussion space exists for his writing. Just mention Worm's sequel in negative way in any place he mods and he'll either tell everyone to stop talking about it or just outright delete/lock your shit. And then theres the drama over him stealth editing other people's comments on Worm years later, which all his fans completely forgot about when he said it was a frickin glitch.

Agreed on all of this. He's not Rothfuss or GRRM, pretending that his work is Tolkien-esque high art, while never actually working on anything and being a diva when pressed for a progress report. He's a very likable, authentic guy, with a crazy work ethic, who's going to be remembered closer to Edgar Rice Burroughs or Robert E Howard than Tolkien. He knows it, too; Mistborn Series 2 is pretty obviously based on 1920-1930's western/ adventure/ detective pulp serials written by guys like Howard.
Also, his entire reason for writing Stormlight was because he wanted to write a world where big anime swords were viable, which is such a dorky reason that I can't help but like the guy.
