Because Dylan's main draw is his ability to write decent lyrics. Song lyrics are poetry. Poetry is literature. I personally don't think he should be eligable for the prize but I can see how some people might think so.

Transtromer is a fantastic poet. If anyone deserved a Nobel, it was him.

That said, the lit prize is an incredibly provincial prize. Of course the whole Nobel project started out as an explicitly provincial prize (which is why Scandinavian representation is crazy, which, when you consider how tiny their population is vs the rest of the world, really makes the Scandinavian bias ridiculously obvious), but that's not what I mean by provincial. I mean that the lit prize should be renamed the Nobel Prize for Literature written in a Conventionally Accepted Western Form. No haijin will ever win a Nobel, for example.

Beyond that, the idea that there is anything authoritative about it is stupid. If I had US$1.5 m to hand out every year to any writer I wanted, my opinion would suddenly skyrocket to stratospheric levels of authoritativeness, and people would be discussing the merits of whoever I picked in the somberest tones of respect.

There's nothing authoritative about the Nobel prize. It's just a lot of money.
