Allegedly the book was finished around 2013. Can't find a source for it, but it seems plausible. This is before the conversation around trans people became the center of public dialogue. Either way, its not the first time McCarthy has included trans people in his work. If you actually read the chapter, its pretty tasteful, and has much more to do with the nature of beauty and the unconscious than it does to modern trans issues. I think if you're offended at the mere inclusion of a kind of person in a book, then you are likely a bigger snowflake than the people you think you're criticizing.

This term really did a number on you guys, didn't it? You've been seething about it for 8 years, long after everyone stopped using it, and you still don't even know what it means.

Eh. Whatever. It doesn't change the fact that you're a bitch to complain about 3 pages of dialogue with a trans character in a book about vagrants and social outcasts

anybody who is actually surprised by this is stupid.
McCarthy has spent the last 2 decades claiming to not know how to write female characters. Writing a trans character gives him a way to “kind of” write a female character without actually having to do so.

Why did he do it? Is one of his grandkids a discord mod or something? Also does the tranny in his new book look like Judge Holden?

I like how you put a period between 1980s and the south, like you were saying something really impactful.

I just mean to emphasize that in the context and setting of the book, the character is certainly a social outcast, and is treated as such by the people around

People were already tripping over themselves to accept trannies in the 80s. I don't buy at all that he would get harassed by southerners. Using The South as a mic drop only makes me think you're a clueless bugman who uncritically accepts every stereotype about southerners being evil white yokels who are mindlessly hateful and violent.
