I was literally a paratrooper. There was this Russian guy in my platoon who was really smart. He was like 10 years older than the rest of the privates/untabbed specialists. Pretty sure he had an advanced degree in economics or finance. Anyway, we would talk about books sometimes because he would always see me reading on deployments, and would criticize me for reading fiction instead of a book about finance, or something practical.
One day he saw me reading Starship Troopers and got excited and started to tell me how it was his favorite book and how it changed his life. Something about the books politics really resonated with him as a new U.S. citizen and he said the books is the reason he joined the Army.
