Almost everyone I know who's majoring in Biology is a Freshman who is either boring and has no real interests or is confused about what they want to major in and just decides to take Biology because it's something "useful," without actually giving much of a shit about it. I predict most lower-division Bio majors will change to a different major in two years.

Becoming rich and "upper-class" is the heretofore "American Dream" of advancing your place in society. It's pretty widely acknowledged (I think) that the ability to improve your social status and economic class in america is vastly reduced. Hence my comment that we are fighting over the tastiest shit sandwich. The whole concept of arguing over which college degree is false because a college degree is worthless no matter what it is. How much better is yours than mine when they are both insignificant?

That is, assuming you actually desire money and prestige and a career (which most westerners do).

Anyways, biology is a stepping stone for me to becoming a doctor= a slight increase in my social and economic station in life, but not as significant a bump as going into the "rich" or political sphere would give me; and remember there is no "college degree" that bumps you into that sphere, outside of upper class institutions open solely to the rich and incredibly talented and famous (aka closed to YOU and ME).

Anyways, my favorite book is Hunger by Knut Hamsun.

Degrees can be insignificant, but by no means are they all insignificant. Furthermore, a degree can be insignificant in one context and significant in another. I don't even plan on using my degree once I get out, but that's not to say it won't have an impact on my life; some people may think me smarter or more learned because I have a college degree whether that's right or wrong.
