It's the internal dialogue of a man who is in love with a woman who is already engaged. The book shows how his feelings of unrequited love consume him and ultimately lead to his downfall. The book is very well written and beautifully articulates feelings that anyone who has been in a similar situation to the protagonist has felt. It's definitely worth checking out given that it's only 100 pages long, if you get nothing else out of it you'll at least get to read a classic of German literature.
