The Golden Ass, the donkey's quest for self-actualisation mirrors monkey's quest for self-divinization.

Sometimes it gets a bit repetitive and is not something you pick up and leave because a lot of plot points and characters reappear back and forth. The plot is is similar to a classical fantasy travel adventure with a buddhist twist, it's fun seeing the group antics and how they develop.
Which version you have? The short one is ok and is around 300 pages long, if you liked it you can try reading the complete one. If you have that read it, if you have the full version you can read the first chapters and see if it's worth it or not.

Good question. I don't think there is one obvious answer. Jason and the Argonauts is a bit like it I suppose.

Some other famous Chinese books have more clearcut Western equivalents. e.g. The Water Margin is pretty much The Adventures Of Robin Hood.

The OP is Yu's full translation in several volumes, which is by far the best. Yu also published an abridged version. Monkey's opening narrative is the best part anyway.

Monkey's rise to heaven and his war with the gods is definitely worth reading and good fun, especially in Yu's translation which includes the lyric poems that other translations don't. You can decide if you want to keep going after that when it becomes a didactic Buddhist contiki tour.
