This made me curious; was there ever a Spanish translation of the Quran produced when Spain was under Muslim control? Or is the idea of translating the Quran a more modern idea?

>> No.21037758

>>21037735
No. The first translation done in Spain was in Latin (1143). The first Spanish translation was done in 1606.

Weren't a lot of early European translations second-hand via that Latin translation? Which to my understanding was not particularly good.

Probably. I'm not really interested enough to research lol

Compare multiple translations and translator's notes to get a better idea of the full meaning. That's what my former neighbor who was Muslim did.

Why are Muslims so much more literate than Christians?

It's a really hard book to read, a friend gave me one and i tried going through it. It's very dense i get why people spend their entire life trying to understand it

Yeah, that's why I'm being so selective and trying to make sure I start out with the right one.

Maybe it's just that the ones who immigrate to the US are more likely to be decently off and well educated because the ones who aren't can't afford to. I think there's a few parts of the world to which that applies- I remember reading that the most common surname for doctors in the US is now Patel if I recall correctly.

I wasn't speaking of Arabs in the US, but rather their culture and religious devotion to reading and interpreting holy texts in all Muslim countries.

He wasn't Arab, actually, he was Senegalese.

I think this depends on the country. Religious rigor is paramount, like in Jewish circles. From a young age they are instructed to study the religion in great detail.

But then you still have illiterate retards in Pakistan/afganistan for example. Or just people who take a casual approach like your typical american christains.
