I believe he means replacing the word "god" in common expressions with "gods", like, "Gods help us."

I believe he's a dumb frog poster, and if an author needs a single deity, they'd make up a name.

ok, so compare

with
> Πειθαρχεῖν δεῖ θεῷ μᾶλλον ἢ ἀνθρώποις
socrates and peter were saying the same thing to their respective governments

Most people dont understand pagan frameworks (outside christian) at all, so they utilize [insert powerful being here] being a catalyst for rationalist atheism and characters worship "gods" as modern christians think of God, but segmented into different abilities.
That said, any author who has their characters substitute "god" with "gods" is, unironically, a midwit.

> Then, by the gods, Meletus, of whom we are speaking, tell me and the court, in somewhat plainer terms, what you mean! for I do not as yet understand whether you affirm that I teach others to acknowledge some gods, and therefore do believe in gods and am not an entire atheist - this you do not lay to my charge; but only that they are not the same gods which the city recognizes - the charge is that they are different gods. Or, do you mean to say that I am an atheist simply, and a teacher of atheism?

Btw, this approach comes almost entirely from the post-modernist theory of capital, and how all societies are based around the concept of capital as opposed to a cultural (original) or religous (post-classical) or even racial (modern) Without thinking, modern man believes he is above the eathereal, at the zenith of his creation, and progessing towards "godhood" himself. Therefore any fantasy author writes higher beings as intrinsicly human, doing away with what makes the "otherworldly" truly "other".

I would argue that we gave various Gods anthropomlrphic features tp understand them, but that differs from the way modernity sees them. Maybe it would be more accurate to say modern created dieties are made to be superheroes or villians. Even the way modernity understands the pagan god is as a superman figure, as opposed to the esoteric. The fact is, most shows and books present religion as an athiest would (most characters dont believe or believe in a way disconnected from their general life). Pagan societies were formed around the family and as an extension, the divine. Every facet of life was understood through that filter, just as everything modern man understands is through the lense of capital and most christians see god as an outside force.
