I'm reading Carl's volume 9 books. The visual in my head of the ego as a gatekeeper between the conscious and unconscious really helps me be more mindful. I was gonna say something else but I forget.

I picture ego as a guard standing at a gate, information approaches from the unconscious realm and the gatekeeper chooses what information to let into the conscious realm, when I had this visual I realized how much important information gets turned away, and now my gatekeeper is more mindful of what to let in

Actually, on a second read of the OP, you are kind of correct, OP: the ego is both the conscious aspect of a person, and the gatekeeper for what unconscious elements are allowed into the conscious realm. However, the ego is not SOLELY a gatekeeper, which is what you imply in the OP.

The persona is a false construction by the ego that a person can use as a mask; it's an extension of the ego, but it is not the true (authentic) ego.
