The only poem I genuinely like is the good night.

Read it aloud. With the manner and reverence of a prayer. It is, or was, a social art; it's necessary for rhythm, intonation, and musicality to be considered. If it's fairly short, you could do worse than memorize it.

Look up scansion and meter faggot. You'll thank me later. Avoid shit that doesn't scan unless it's from the Bible

You'll get it eventually if you just keep reading it.

I'll tell you the secret

Listen to some professional (not random lisping fag) readings of poems you like or think might be cool on Youtube, and let them teach your zoomer shit brain how to slow the fuck down and read with some gravitas. Listen to the Orson Welles reading of Rime of the Ancient Mariner for example, with the animated Gustave Dore illustrations. Or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCO3xgiL1EU

Read the Lays of Ancient Rome

Meter isn't abstract or technical. You can hear the rhythm in both these poems.

There should be a thread about this kind of recommendation. A lot of people really don't realise how important is to read a poem with the right rhythm
Good point anon

Has anyone read The Visionary Company?
Also any suggestions for choosing which poems to read?
I looked at the gutenberg files for Byron and there's like 7 volumes of writings, do you just study the most well known poems? There's so many poems to read and I assume most of them aren't of interest to anyone other than Byron scholars/lovers

with an open heart willing to be swept away. read charitably and be open in your interpretation, but first and foremost appreciate the poetry as an aesthetic experience :)
