specially for It's time, It makes sense for people to think It's real, if I were a peasant on the year 120 or whatever and I read Lord of the Rings I'd think it was real too, It's pure kino and you should read it specially if you're an atheist

eh it's decent but book of Job is particularly overhyped, the actual story it's known for is three chapters out of over 40 and the rest is a very repetitive and not particularly insightful debate. Good concept, very lacking execution. People debate if it was moral of God to kill Job's children and servants but the book was not even about it and it was just an afterthought for the author who wanted to just write about some old guys arguing.

The book of job is executed incredibly effective. Not only does it give you three perspectives (divine, ego, bystanders), but also lets you suffer with Job through arguing with idiots and God. Job is in the right against the idiots for the most part, but he's in the wrong against God for a very specific reason. What is this reason? I'd say it is Job questioning God's judgement.

Acts and Romans are the funniest bits. You can imagine generations of sad little people imagining themselves as Paul being dragged before Herod and Pilate, bobbing up and down with a deranged look in his eyes and making his little suck-up,speaking as if he were speaking to equals and giddy over it.

Romans is the more cerebral of the two, where Paul tells the Christian that they're a homosexual and an extortioner and a thief.

As a fiction it's okay. But I don't think any non-jew can honestly understand any of the context to sincerely get Jesus or what Paul's talking about; without growing up under a terrible jewish theocracy then there's nothing to be "saved" from by a jewish messiah.

That's funny. Schizophrenia is what happens to a Cultural Christian when they try to do good in the world and develop a Jesus Complex because "there is only one who is good!" and "humans cannot be good!"

Nah I just disagree with the nihilism and solipsism that I see in religious people; their disinterest in the world and people around them and their strange dissonance of thinking "life begins" when they're dead.

The Bible isn’t mythology. It’s actually very historical and the archeological evidence has proven it over and over again at this point. The behavior of God’s own covenant people is atrocious and a story of endless failure and falling into depravity. It doesn’t even attempt to hide it. All of this makes it pretty unique compared to other religious scriptures. The world of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments is actually pretty down to earth compared to Greek myths and Hindu myths, for example—even compared to the myths of Ugarit and Mesopotamia. YHWH doesn’t have any sort of theogony, there is no theomachy, or any other typical mythological features. The most ‘mythological’ aspects are present in other traditions such as the fall from a golden age or a worldwide flood. YHWH breaks decisively in history, guides it, and rules it unopposed towards destined ends. YHWH is very much a God of history, unlike pagan deities. It’s not like LOTR at all.

>archeological evidence has proven it over and over
Except there are nuances. It's like claiming the historicity of Homer.
Sure, according to Hittite documents, some Ahhiyawans (Achaeans), raided some small settlement named Wilussa (Ilios), ruled by Alaksandu (Alexander/Paris). But the rest of the picture is not reliable at all.

>The behavior of God’s own covenant people is atrocious
The behavior of Achilles is atrocious.

>All of this makes it pretty unique compared to other religious scriptures.
Archaeological evidence suggests that prior to exile, jews had a very standard polytheism, with high god El, El's son Baal, storm god Yahweh, "queen of heaven" Asherah, chaos monster Leviathan, etc. Oh, and angels were gods in their own right.
All of this is still occasionally slipping through the text. Like, where Moses upon receiving commandments suddenly becomes "keren" (either moon-glowing, or horned) like a Mesopotamian moon god Suen (who has horns and responsible for laws). Or where Yahweh swears to Moses by the Sun and Earth (Sun god Shamash was historically called as a witness when taking oaths). Etc.

>YHWH breaks decisively in history
Yahweh's genesis 1 is highly polemical towards other semitic mythologies. But unlike ancient jews, you do not comprehend the historical context.

There was. Leviathan, Yam, Rahab, rebellious "sons of god", probably a sun god "host of heaven", probably Tehom.

Pre-exilic Yahweh was quite an ordinary storm god.

>Job is a good deconstruction of the abrahamic god, because
Job is a good deconstruction, because it refers to god's battles with chaos monsters. Reminding audience of the days, when Yahweh wasn't actually considered to be responsible for the creation of the world out of nothing.

Just like Judges 19–21 is superficially about "breaking customs/oaths is le bad", but simultaneously between lines is signalling that breaking customs is absolutely okay, if your existence depends on it (Benjamin tribe chooses to steal women from other tribes in order to retain their Israelite identity, rather than going endogamous or intermarrying with non-jews)
