Lads. I have a 3 year old boy and a 1 year old girl. What books would you recommend I read to them in these early years? I’d like to get them familiar with children’s classics and get them hearing about ancient myths and legends. Are there any good resources you can point me to? Thanks in advance

it depends if you want them to be moral or not, if the latter - bible verses, simplified, if the former - greek mythology

My dad read us Narnia when me and my siblings were young. 3 is probably a bit young for that I suppose

I started really early and my mom not only read to me but started forcing me to read even fairly difficult books. Find books conducive to reading to them and teaching them to read at the same time.
Simple picture book classics are key to that.

"The Brothers Lionheart", when they're about 6. Highly recommended.
It positively affected my approach towards mortality. Some parents say that it is "too dark" for children or whatever, but that's just because it avoids your average sugar-coating of death. It also very engaging.

I also highly recommend the "Five Children and It" trilogy (Five Children and It, The Phoenix and the Carpet, The Story of the Amulet).

This.
That's the stuff that can accompany you through your entire life from your earliest years.
They do require your enthusiasm if you're going to read them to your children, though.

I honestly can barely remember. I vaguely remember when I was like 5 she forced me to binge read the entire little house on the prairie series despite not being f*male. There was a lot leading up to that ofc.

Hmmm...Edgar Allan Poe's short stories. Start em off right. If you want something cheerier, try C.S. Lewis

Roald Dahl is a treasured memory of my childhood reading. He writes about good children receiving rewards and naughty children being punished, which I think is extremely absent from contemporary children's media.

Nothing. Read in front of your children often and they will more than likely pick up on the habit. You can't force kids to adopt behaviors and hobbies.

yeah, like i said, you missed out on having bedtime stories read to you. op was asking what to read to them, not what he should give them to read. i agree that forcing an interest on a kid is not good. so I'm doubly sorry that you were forced to do something you didn't enjoy. may you heal from your traumas anon

>> No.20969144

I was read bedtime stories too. You can read your kids whatever you want but if the goal is make them avid readers, which I'm assuming is OPs real objective, then don't force it.
