Pre-modern men, and even in many conservative cultures today, affection between men isn't considered sexual or romantic. ok but what is the nohomo explanation for Melville making up a gay sex club in Redburn (if it was just a gambling den there wouldn't be need for the mystery and the deeply disturbing atmosphere, if it was a regular brothel there would be women mentioned, and it was made up because he had never been to London at that point in his life) and generally everything in Redburn related to Bolton
