I am overwhelmed with rage when I see a novel with "A Novel" on the cover.

Why?

1. I know it is a novel.
2. It comes across as a kind of false modesty that you know is not reflective of either the author or the publisher. It's this kind off off handed "Oh, yes, that. It's a mere novel. Just a novel of mine. A mere work of fiction I wrote" sentiment like they are some wealthy minor noble swanning around their mansion trying their hand different arts when you know for a fact they are salivating at the thought of sales.

For me it's the "A". If it was just "Novel" it would be okay purely as a descriptor, but the noun phrase in its ubiquity makes it rather ugh.

I hate it when a historical biography is called "[name]: A Life". Many such cases

>1. I know it is a novel
It has always been my understanding that that designation is meant to *clarify* that the book is in fact a novel.

1. Often enough you don't know shit.
2. "Novel" is an adjective. "The novel" makes no sense, unless it's the novelization of a movie. "A novel" is the only viable option that doesn't sound dumb.

This. It's to eliminate any liability of some mouth drooling retard who buys a book called "The House Builder" thinking it's literally a book about building houses, and will get triggered and angry and write a nasty review on Amazon later because he has been "misled," even though he grabbed the book in the fiction section and it is entirely his own fault for taking zero proactive effort to make an educated choice before buying.

Why would people be too retarded to understand that without the clarifier? Who looks at a book called

kek, I totally agree with this perception. It would be like if I submitted a short story to my writing professor and, under the title, wrote "A sketch".
>>20949371
>often enough you don't know shit
So I'm in the fiction section of the bookstore and 99% of the books in this section are novels. If I'm seeking out fiction, is finding out that a novel-sized book found in the fiction section isn't actually a novel but a short story cycle going to be the thing that dissuades me from choosing it.

Cormac McCarthy was apparently concerned about this and very nearly insisted that the cover of his novel The Road contain the warning: "This is not a guidebook to building, traversing, or crossing roads. This is a work of fiction."

Yeah I hated that. The “intellectualized” poop part in contrast to the crude diarrhea part to show the narrator’s progress from degenerate to serious writer. Book is so fucking dishonest
