It is fair to say that Gnosticism is a progression from Plato? Some theologians I've listened to make this connection although I'm sceptical.

This is an excellent introduction to understanding the overarching narrative of the Bible, and many other issues as well. I can't think of a better short introduction to the Bible.

Louis Bouyer, The Bible and the Gospel: The Meaning of Scripture
https://www.amazon.com/Bible-Gospel-Meaning-Scripture-Speaks/dp/1949899519

Bouyer was an ordained Lutheran minister who converted to Catholicism.

The Catholic Catechism is a superb exposition of the Catholic faith.

Daniel A. Keating, Deification and Grace is a fine short introduction to those matters.

I would note that it's quite difficult to jump into Aquinas's theology without a solid grounding in Aristotle. His commentaries on scripture (for which he was best known during his lifetime) are much more accessible. There is a nice selection of these in this recently released volume:

Thomas Aquinas: Selected Commentaries on the New Testament, Jason C. Paone, editor

And here's a good general list of books:

Gnosticism is a "progression" from Plato in the same sense that Christian theology generally is

Confraternity of the Precious Blood published a simplified pocket Summa Theologica called "My Way of Life". Can be found on Amazon or TAN Books.
Pretty good starting point IMO, but to quote Kempis,
>Every perfection in this life has some imperfection mixed with it and no learning of ours is without some darkness. Humble knowledge of self is a surer path to God than the ardent pursuit of learning. Not that learning is to be considered evil, or knowledge, which is good in itself and so ordained by God; but a clean conscience and virtuous life ought always to be preferred. Many often err and accomplish little or nothing because they try to become learned rather than to live well.
Seek not theology, lest ye apply it to living in a meaningful way. Otherwise, it is simply using knowledge of God for your own vanity.
