Storm of steel seemed almost boring at times to me (penguin version). It felt soulless and all over the place. So many crazy shit happend and he escaped death so many times that it become ridiculous. Some of these events he experienced would be crazy enough but when it happens 27th time in the book and when he describes the shelling for the 278th time I start questioning what the hell is the point of this book.

Does the Iliad not perfectly demonstrate the futility of war? It ends with a father begging for his son back and the arrogant achiles realizing his own actions have brought horrible consequences while he reflects on his own looming death
There's a good reason why it's considered the greatest poem / book ever written because it contains nuggets of universal human wisdom

Im pretty sure its just to live his suffering secondhand so you can understand the rest of his work.

And describe each one in excrutiating detail so you can at least try to understand 1% of how much that shit sucked and why his worldview is the way it is and why he was influenced in his other works. Thats the only reason I can see it being written other than the obvious redditor response "its antiwar its pacifist!".
