20943759 No.20943759 [Reply] [Original]

Can this ever get the recognition it deserves or it will always be limited by its genre?

>> No.20943766

It better stay underrated as it is. I don't want filthy jewllywood hands to soil it. Villeneuve did a good job with the first book, but he'll probably get replaced after part 2

Genre Fiction is garbage in nature so it will always be limited by it's genre.

I don't disagree that in a way, genre fiction could be considered lesser than historical fiction, but why exactly?

Personally, I wonder if it's because all senses of aesthetics are experiential, so maybe the mistake being made is that there is always a moment in history that better reflects a situation better than a made-up world/scenario.

Do you think then that being versed in history would be the best thing for any author?

Is this the best in the series? I've only read the first book, loved it.

He's already stated he'll be done after part 2. Slated to start on Rendezvous with Rama

I finished the series for the first time, God Emperor is the peak, the action scenes are great and Leto is hilarious in all his interactions with actual humans

it's because most genre fic is trash

historical fiction is worse on the basis that it's genre-fiction pretending to be real.

Which is worse? Suggesting you can develop a world separate from our own, that is also somehow meant to be exploring issues wholly relevant to us because we're human, or recreating a historical setting and trying to eliminate your own ways of thinking so the recounting is actually legitimate?

>> No.20944489

>>20944369
the latter because you are being dishonest in most cases and already filling in huuuuge amounts of blanks. If you want accurate accounting just read a history book.
Either way, both can be done well because fiction is not as much about accuracy as it is about exploration and speculation. It's the author speaking in many ways to the reader.

I will preface by insisting that I don't mean this in a dismissive way:

Who cares?

Normies aren't equipped to enjoy it; it's more of a philosophical exploration full of allegories than it is a conventional novel or anything else. As long as it is known and considered by the kinds of people capable of sounding its depths...well, that's enough, and all one can hope for.

I think geod is on a very restrict list of great books that nobody will ever give a fuck.
a) its a sequel to a very average book
b) its the fourth installment of a series
c) the series fizzled out in quality (and end up being anally raped by a bunch of hacks) which led to it being kinda disregard over time
d) its a fantasy/scifi book
even amongst dune fans some people find it a bit too weird.
So, yeah, it will always be limited by its genre.

Only chance it has is if someone adapted it properly, but i find that even harder to occur.

I think so but its really nothing like the other books. Its kinda the nexus of the story, and Herbert decided to rant and ramble about everything and anything. Its structurally strange, awkwardly paced, but its very enthralling.

Have you seen the spicediver cut? I doubt there's many people who hate fan-cuts as much as myself, but that one is really the best dune-cut. Its the lynch cut + longer tv cut but done well

>> No.20945387

>>20944966
No, unfortunately I saw the theatrical cut, which is very confusing because it throws out exposition dumps everywhere but drill fails to explain a bunch of shit although otherwise it’s a pretty enjoyable movie, a flawed masterpiece even
