I can't shake the feeling that academia is 95% a result of what your innate character and environment (family, education and social milieu) predisposes you to say, what you think others want you to say, not deviating too hard from what others are saying so as to avoid becoming a social pariah, and keeping within the limits of what you can say without legal (or at least career-related) repercussions. What are some books that analyze academia in a sociological sense, as a community?

You mean contemporary academia? I feel like it used to be that you went into academia if you were a social pariah.

Depends. It sounds like you have controversial opinions in mind and I don’t think it applies all that much to other things. You just have to be careful not to push the wrong buttons related to race and gender and politics. It sucks but otherwise you’re free to deviate all you’d like.
