How do I read his Cantos? I've read a bit already but I don't get it. What is some essential literature that one should read before diving in?

The entire western canon and obscure works by European authors. Or just get a book that explains all the references.

The Cantos make much more sense when read in revrse chronological order.

the secret with Pound is that you dont need to understand all the references, though there are companion books that explain them all to you, in dull and exhaustive detail. A reasonable education, and a few of Pounds own translations will leave you pretty much ready.

In the early Cantos: Homer in the big one, Browning is next, some Chinese plays, most of which he translates himself. those French troubadour poets are pretty much the most obscure thing thing he references.

He's a complaining faggot, there is nothing to get from his work. He'll actually set you back.

This. Pound said "if you don't understand something, write it down and come back to it later in life" (paraphrase)

The pound era is the best "companion" to Pound in general though. Also read "The Zukofsky Era" because no one reads Louis Zukofsky
