i recommend everyone to read suicide by Édouard Levé.Once he finished the book he gave it to his editor then 10 days later killed himself. Such beautiful prose (if you know french ofc)

Most authors wrote about their woeisme specifically to get some arthoe bitch to fall for them. Art is a mating strategy like anything else.

houellebecq destroyed my mind
well not really, i knew what i was getting into
i want to hate him but i also cant help be glad for him that his life at least was blessed by fame

its like if you imagine one of the narrator characters of his books suddenly getting famous, having access to continual external affirmation of identity, continual recognition and the sanity of having a place and being known, you see how lucky he is, and how he would be dead if not famous.

the very very thin threads of life that you can cling to as you age are not enough to justify not killing yourself, your inventory of sensation being finally reduced to the dumb stimulus of food, smoking, escapist media. i.e, basically everything that raises you as a human above your soulless reptilian basis just collapses and you become a husk of a body performing routine maintenance on itself. but for houellebecq himself, maybe just by pure luck, he is largely protected from such reductions as he ages. it's still miserable and the societal problems he talks about are still the rule, but the man himself is an exception. i think i read he does have a young wife for example. i also think he said some shit like "i like being liked, and that staves off some despair"

he still has zero solutions for everyone else. we really do live in an age of youth worship.
