I would also add that, even though I've only read The Hamlet so far, I think that Faulkner's characters Flem and Mink Snopes are fascinating and confusing in the best possible way. At one point in The Hamlet, Mink lives purely off his own superhuman will & hatred, wheat dust from a barrel, coffee, and wood splinters in this isolated shack after doing something very naughty. It's a very intense and engaging view of this simple "hick" who has this seemingly inexhaustible, roaring ocean of will and raw power.

>character so compelling that author can't even debunk his arguments despite desperately trying to
seriously, it's in his letters to his editors. He tried to debunk the Ivan chapters in the subsequent Zosima chapters, but he felt it was unsatisfactory.

Is BK really all it's hyped up to be? I'm about to finish Anna and was hunting for a new tome.

I think almost any Shakespeare protagonist fits the bill but Hamlet in particular.

Yeah he's a disturbing character, not the least reason being that we all carry a little Ivan inside our own minds, I think.

>> No.20860666

>>20859503
yeah it's pretty damn good, but do not attempt if you are weak of my mind my friend, cause some of the concepts in the book are very bleak. That being said, it's also got some very life affirming and beautiful parts, but overall you should tread carefully if you're disposed to depression or pessimism.

It's long but it flies by. I truly didn't want it to end. But the Ivan parts, the Smerdyakov parts, and the Zossima chapters are all very intellectually stimulating beyond belief.

so far Raskolnikov for me. haven't read TBK yet, honestly it's hard to believe that most here think TBK is superior to C&P because that book was absolute kino, can't imagine it being topped.

Runner up is Lord Henry from Dorian Gray.
